Commercial Rekeying

The office has been reshuffled twice since the locks were last touched. Reception can open the server room, the warehouse crew has a key to accounting, and the chart that once explained who could open what has not been seen since the move.

In plain words

Commercial rekeying changes the pins inside a business's existing lock cylinders so that a new key operates them and every earlier key stops working, while the hardware itself stays on the door. The locksmith works from a list of the openings the business controls and the people who need to pass through each one, sets the cylinders to fresh combinations, cuts keys to match and records which key opens which door. Because nothing is replaced unless it is worn, a whole premises can be brought back under control in one scheduled visit, with the doors locking and unlocking exactly as before but answering only to keys you have counted.

The call
You have just signed the lease on a unit the previous tenant ran for a decade. The landlord handed over three keys, the back door wears a padlock nobody can open, and nobody can say how many front-door keys are still out there.

How the visit goes

Person leaning over a blue bench machine in a small shop with keys, padlocks and door hardware displayed on blue walls.
  1. Scene 1

A walk of every door and lock

The locksmith walks the premises with you and lists every opening that should be in the plan: the customer entrance, the receiving door, offices, stockroom, cash room, server closet, the mailbox, cabinets, and any padlocks on gates, compounds or roll shutters. Each lock is identified by type, since a mortise cylinder in an aluminum storefront door, a key-in-lever set on an office, a rim cylinder on a back door and an interchangeable core in a stockroom each come out and go back in differently. The keyway and the maker's mark are noted, and the condition of each cylinder is checked, so the list from the walk is what the quote and the work are built on.

  2. Scene 2

    Storefront and mortise cylinders

Aluminum storefront doors carry a threaded mortise cylinder held by a small set screw in the door edge. The locksmith loosens the screw, spins the cylinder out, repins it, and threads it back to the same depth so the cam engages the deadbolt or hook bolt behind it and nothing else. Mortise locks in older office doors work on the same principle with a heavier lock body. On both, the depth and cam type matter as much as the pinning: a cylinder a turn too far in or a cam of the wrong shape will feel right in the hand but fail to throw the bolt, so each is cycled open and closed.

  3. Scene 3

A keying chart in plain language

You leave the visit with a one-page chart that lists every opening by name, the key group it belongs to, the code stamped on that group's keys and how many were cut. It is written for the manager, not the locksmith: the stockroom is called the stockroom, and a glance shows that key group B opens the office and the cash room and nothing else. The bitting details that a locksmith needs to add a cylinder later are kept separately and securely. Pin the chart inside the manager's cupboard, keep a copy off site, and it becomes the reference every future key question is answered from.

What shapes the quoteHumberlea Lock Experts

Landlord and base-building coordination
Suite doors that must accept both your key and the landlord's master, or work that needs the property manager on site, add coordination the quote allows for.
Mix of lock types
A key-in-lever cylinder, a storefront mortise cylinder, a back-door rim cylinder and a padlock take different handling, though several full-size formats can share one pin kit for the same key system; a premises with a wide mix of cylinder types and brands still takes longer than one with one.
No existing chart or keys
When nobody knows what the current keys open, the locksmith reads and records each cylinder before planning the new keying, and that reconstruction is time in the quote.

Things people wonder about

What is the difference between rekeying a business and replacing its locks?

Rekeying keeps every lock on the door and changes only the pins inside the cylinder, so a new key works and the old ones stop. Replacing swaps the hardware itself. Commercial cylinders are made to be repinned many times, so rekeying suits any lock in sound condition and leaves the levers, trim and door untouched. Replacement is chosen door by door for cylinders that are worn, corroded or too light for what they protect.

What is an interchangeable core and why is it suggested for staff turnover?

A small-format interchangeable core is a small figure-eight cylinder that slides out of the lever, deadbolt or padlock when a control key is turned, with no tools needed; larger doors sometimes use a large-format core with a different profile instead. A manager keeps the control key in the safe and a few spare cores on hand, so a missing key means the core is swapped in moments and repinned later. For a business with frequent staff turnover, it turns a call-out into a routine.

Does stamping keys 'do not duplicate' stop people copying them?

Not reliably. The stamp is a request, and any key on a standard blank can be copied by anyone with the blank and a machine. What does work is controlling the blank itself through a restricted keyway, or controlling access to the lock through interchangeable cores and a tight register. Stamping still has a place: a serial code on each key, instead of the business name, lets you track it without telling a finder where it fits.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Where most homes were built decades ago, doors often still carry their original mortise locks and brass knobs. That hardware can usually be cleaned, re-sprung and kept in service, with a modern deadbolt added above it for strength without losing the look.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census). In a building, a lockout happens in a hallway rather than a porch, and the neighbours notice. A locksmith confirms you belong to the suite, opens the door with the least fuss the lock allows, and leaves the door and cylinder intact for the night.
