A keypad or phone-controlled lock is only as good as the door it sits on. Before anything is mounted on a home in Pine Point we check the alignment, the strike and the bore, then set up codes, a mechanical backup and a walkthrough so the household can actually use what was installed.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Established homes often have non-standard bores and backsets from an earlier generation of hardware. A locksmith working in such an area carries adapter plates and cylinders in the older sizes, so an upgrade fits the existing door instead of forcing a new one.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).Where most people live in townhouses, apartments or condos, doors come in two kinds: the suite door you control and the shared entrances the building manages. A locksmith works on your door freely and coordinates with management on the rest.

Home Lockout Service

Person leaning over a blue bench machine in a small shop with keys, padlocks and door hardware displayed on blue walls. — Pine Point
The call
The moving truck has left, half the boxes are inside, and the single key the previous owner handed over turns the knob but not the deadbolt. Someone locked it on the way out, and nobody has a key that fits it.

Deadbolt Installation

The call
The bolt on the front door is keyed on both sides. Getting out at night means finding the key in the dark, and with a toddler in the house you have decided the inside should turn by hand.

Master Key System Design

Hands holding a silver-colored lock cylinder and a brass-colored key above a workbench with padlocks, keys and tools. — Master Key System Design, Pine Point
The call
On the warehouse floor, a shift supervisor's key opens the loading dock, the tool crib and the manager's office, though only the dock is really part of the job. Nobody planned it that way; the key was simply copied from whichever one was…

After the fit-out, the gym floor now holds more people than the old office space ever did, and the exit door at the back still has the same turn-lock it had when the room held desks.

High Security Locks

Drawn forPine Point
ScaleNot to scale

The high security page is for homeowners who want to stop thinking about who has a key, and for businesses that need to know exactly. Both get the same honest walk-through of cylinders, strikes, key control and safes, and a recommendation sized to the door.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

The pharmacy stockroom, the server closet or the cash office is protected by the same ordinary cylinder as the staff washroom. One lost key on a lanyard would open all of them.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Someone tried the back door while you were away. The jamb is splintered around the strike, the bolt is bent, and the knob turns with a grinding feel.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

Someone tried the door last winter. The frame took it, but the strike plate is bent, one screw hole is stripped, and the bolt sits in the pocket at a slight angle.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

They did not get in. The attempt left a screwdriver gouge in the door edge, a strike plate bent outward and a deadbolt that now needs a shove to throw.

Things people wonder about

My key snapped off in the lock. Is that still a lockout call?

It starts the same way and adds one step. The broken blade is removed with extraction tools that grip it and draw it out, rather than pushing it deeper, and then the door is opened normally. A key rarely breaks in a healthy cylinder, so the locksmith checks the pins and springs afterwards and cleans or services the cylinder if wear caused it. A new key is cut from the two halves or from the code, since a weakened copy would snap again.

I rent. Can I have a deadbolt installed on my unit door?

You can, with a conversation first. Tenancy rules in this province expect a tenant to have the landlord's consent before changing locks and expect the landlord to hold a key, so ask in writing and share the plan. Many landlords welcome a proper bolt. The locksmith can key the new cylinder to the building's existing key where the keyway allows, and leave a note of the model and keys cut for the building manager.

What does key control actually mean?

It means knowing, at any time, how many keys exist for a given door or level, who holds each one, and how a new copy would be authorized. A master key system supports key control by design, since keys are marked by role, logged by serial, and cut only against the chart, rather than copied informally whenever someone asks for one.

Can exit hardware be styled to match the rest of the building's finishes?

Yes, within what the door's rating allows. Exit devices and their trim come in a range of finishes to sit alongside other door hardware in the building, and outside trim in particular, being the visible part from a public side, can be chosen to match levers or pulls used elsewhere. A fire-rated opening narrows the finish choice somewhat, since the whole assembly has to stay within its listing.
