Households in Humberlea often collect locks from different decades that all take different keys. We rekey them to a single key where the hardware allows, replace the one or two that cannot be matched, and set up a spare that lives somewhere sensible. You leave with a lighter ring and a clear idea of which key does what.

Shop rules

Keys cut right, locks set true.

  1. Plain words. We talk about pins, cylinders and strikes only when it helps you understand. Otherwise it is 'this is why the door sticks and here is what fixes it'.
  2. Respect for your door. We treat an old wooden door or a new steel one as yours, not as a project. Non-destructive methods come first, and we ask before drilling anything.
  3. Knowing what you are left with. Before we leave, you will know exactly what changed, how many keys exist and what to keep an eye on. Nothing is left as a mystery.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Call about rekeying your new home.

How a visit goes

Exit hardware is one place where we do not improvise. A push bar on a fire exit has to release with a single motion and no key, and a door on an escape route has to swing the right way.

    Step 1 of 5

    Call and describe the door

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

  2. Illustration: a white work van with its headlights on, driving a lit street at night

    Step 2 of 5

    On our way

Has it been forced, does it drag, who has had keys? Those answers tell us whether the frame, the cylinder or the key list needs attention first.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In neighbourhoods of established homes, keys have often been copied many times over many owners. Rekeying every exterior door to one fresh key is the common first job, and it works on old cylinders just as well as on new ones.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).Where most homes are apartments or condos, storage lockers, bike rooms and parking gates carry their own locks. A locksmith can supply and key padlocks and cam locks for those spaces so one household ring covers everything it uses.

Things people wonder about

Do you work with our alarm company and access-control provider?

Yes, and it makes the visit smoother. The alarm station is told an entry is expected and the authorised person handles the disarm and password. For access control, the provider can often confirm the controller's status, unlock a magnetic lock remotely, or re-enrol fobs once you are inside, while the locksmith handles the mechanical side and the override cylinder. Nobody's wiring is cut; each party does the part it is set up to do.

What should I tell you on the phone?

Say what the key does: refuses to turn, spins without effect, or works only when the door is pushed or pulled. Name the lock type if you can, whether it is a deadbolt, knob, lever or an old mortise lock, and which side of the building the door faces. Mention recent weather, any spray that went into the keyway, any other door you can use, and whether anyone is inside. That short list decides the tools that come.

What is the difference between a fire rating and a burglary rating?

They come from two different kinds of tests, and burglary ratings are not all one kind either. Some are timed in minutes, measuring how long a trained attempt with real tools takes to force the door open; others are construction classifications based on steel thickness rather than a timed attack. A fire rating is measured in hours, from a furnace test tracking how hot the interior gets while the outside reaches roughly 850 to 1,000 degrees Celsius. A high number on one says nothing about the other.

What actually makes a lock high security?

Three things working together. The cylinder has a second locking mechanism, usually a sidebar released by finger pins or rotating pins, plus hardened steel in the path of a drill, so picking, bumping and drilling take far longer than on an ordinary lock. The deadbolt and strike are heavier and fastened into the framing. And the key is cut on a patented or restricted blank that only an authorised person can have copied. Remove any one and the door is weaker than the label suggests.
