You will not be talked into more than the door needs. In Toronto we grade what is fitted, name the one change that would matter most, and stop there unless you ask for more. A household that wants the full upgrade can have it; a household that wants the sticking bolt fixed gets exactly that, done properly.

Shop rules

Keys cut right, locks set true.

  1. Plain words. We talk about pins, cylinders and strikes only when it helps you understand. Otherwise it is 'this is why the door sticks and here is what fixes it'.
  2. Respect for your door. We treat an old wooden door or a new steel one as yours, not as a project. Non-destructive methods come first, and we ask before drilling anything.
  3. Knowing what you are left with. Before we leave, you will know exactly what changed, how many keys exist and what to keep an eye on. Nothing is left as a mystery.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Call about rekeying your new home.

Which fix fits?

Tap a situation. The answer opens here.

If Someone forced the door and the frame is split.

Then Frame repair, a new strike and a fresh cylinder.

The wood is rebuilt before new hardware goes in, so the door locks tonight.

If They came in through a window, but your spare keys were on the hook.

Then Rekey every lock those keys operate.

Anything those keys open needs new pins: house, garage and shed, and a taken car key should be deprogrammed. Lock Rekeying

If There are fresh tool marks around the lock but nobody got in.

Then A security check of that door and the others.

We look at what held and suggest reinforcements that make a second attempt pointless.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Where most homes were built decades ago, doors often still carry their original mortise locks and brass knobs. That hardware can usually be cleaned, re-sprung and kept in service, with a modern deadbolt added above it for strength without losing the look.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census). In a building, a lockout happens in a hallway rather than a porch, and the neighbours notice. A locksmith confirms you belong to the suite, opens the door with the least fuss the lock allows, and leaves the door and cylinder intact for the night.

Things people wonder about

What should I tell you on the phone?

Say what the key does: refuses to turn, spins without effect, or works only when the door is pushed or pulled. Name the lock type if you can, whether it is a deadbolt, knob, lever or an old mortise lock, and which side of the building the door faces. Mention recent weather, any spray that went into the keyway, any other door you can use, and whether anyone is inside. That short list decides the tools that come.

I am a landlord. Should I rekey between tenants?

Many landlords do, and it removes the question of whether every copy came back. The locksmith rekeys the unit's cylinders so the incoming tenant holds the only working keys, cuts the copies you want, and notes the count for your move-in record. Because provincial tenancy rules expect the tenant to be handed replacement keys whenever a landlord changes a lock, the visit ends with keys for both of you and a clear list of which doors were done.

How do I know what brand or type of lock is on my mailbox?

You generally do not need to; identifying the hardware is part of the visit. The locksmith reads the maker's mark on the lock face, measures the cylinder and cam, and checks the hole pattern in the compartment door, which together point to a matching replacement even when the original brand is no longer sold.

What is the difference between a fire rating and a burglary rating?

They come from two different kinds of tests, and burglary ratings are not all one kind either. Some are timed in minutes, measuring how long a trained attempt with real tools takes to force the door open; others are construction classifications based on steel thickness rather than a timed attack. A fire rating is measured in hours, from a furnace test tracking how hot the interior gets while the outside reaches roughly 850 to 1,000 degrees Celsius. A high number on one says nothing about the other.
