If Someone forced the door and the frame is split.
Then Frame repair, a new strike and a fresh cylinder.
The wood is rebuilt before new hardware goes in, so the door locks tonight.

A lock problem is rarely only a lock problem. It is a door that swells shut in a damp week, a key that snapped on a cold morning, a tenant who left without handing anything back. In Westmount we listen first, explain the options, and do tidy work you can see before we drive off.

The pages that follow describe the lock services offered in Westmount one by one, without sales talk. Where a service has a simpler or less involved cousin, the page says so. Where a repair will do instead of a replacement, the page says that too. The aim is for you to choose well, not to choose more.

Look after the lock and the key ages slowly. Keep the cylinder lubricated with the product its maker specifies and free of grit, and have a binding door adjusted, since resistance raises the risk, though a worn, bent or fatigued key can still fail under normal use. Retire copies that have gone thin or kinked instead of straightening them. Cut spares from code, and rotate them so one key is not doing all the work. Take the ring weight off a car key. Small habits, but they add years.
Everything those keys fit. That usually means the front, back and side doors, the garage man-door, the mailbox and any padlocks, and in a rental the suite door with the landlord's involvement. Rekeying changes a serviceable cylinder to answer to a new key, and a cylinder that cannot be rekeyed is replaced instead. Doing every affected opening in one visit, keyed alike where the cylinders are compatible, means no forgotten door still answers to the stolen ring.
You can, with a conversation first. Tenancy rules in this province expect a tenant to have the landlord's consent before changing locks and expect the landlord to hold a key, so ask in writing and share the plan. Many landlords welcome a proper bolt. The locksmith can key the new cylinder to the building's existing key where the keyway allows, and leave a note of the model and keys cut for the building manager.
On a cylinder mortise lock this points to the cylinder rather than the case. The set screw that holds the cylinder in the door has loosened or stripped so the whole cylinder rotates, or the cam on the back of the cylinder has worn or is the wrong shape and no longer catches the bolt lever. Both are fixed by resetting or replacing the cylinder and its set screw, and the case itself is usually fine.
