Broken Key Extraction

The padlock on the shed has been stiff all summer. Today the key twisted, cracked at the tip, and left the end buried deep in the keyway.

In plain words

Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in. First, the locksmith confirms you are entitled to the door or vehicle. Once the piece is out, the cylinder is inspected and cleaned, since a healthy lock does not rule out a key that was already worn, bent or fatigued, and a fresh key is cut so you are not relying on the copy that failed.

The call
That key had been bending a little for years, and you kept straightening it. Today it finally cracked at the deepest cut. The stub is in the lock, and the spare you found goes in a few millimetres and stops against it.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

    How the piece is sitting

The first look is at the fragment itself, without touching it. Does any of the blade show above the cylinder face, or is it flush or deeper still? Is the plug sitting at its normal rest position, or did it stop partway round when the key gave way? A protruding piece in a resting plug is the simplest case. A fragment past the shear line in a rotated plug means the pins are holding it, and the plug has to be brought back before anything will slide. Reading this correctly decides which extractor comes out of the case and spares the keyway from needless probing.

  2. Scene 2

The spiral extractor for a stubborn piece

When a fragment sits flat in the keyway with its cuts facing the pins and nothing for a hook to catch, a spiral extractor is the tool. It looks like a very fine screw on a handle. Slid alongside the blade and turned gently, its threads bite into the ridges of the key cuts and grip them. The locksmith then pulls straight back, and the fragment comes with it. A second spiral from the other side of the blade is sometimes used to steady the piece. It is slow and careful work, and it leaves the pins and springs exactly where they were.

  3. Scene 3

A door that no longer fights the key

If the bolt had been dragging in its strike, that is corrected while the locksmith is there, because a bolt that binds turns every key into a lever. Dropped hinges get longer screws driven into the framing; a strike pocket that pinches the bolt is filed or shifted; a weatherstrip that was pushing the door off square is pared back. The test is simple: the thumb-turn should throw the bolt with one finger and no push on the door. Since wood swells in humid summers and shrinks in dry winter air, a seasonal glance at the screws keeps the key from taking the strain again.

What shapes the quoteHumberlea Lock Experts

Locked or unlocked door
If the door is locked, the extraction is followed by opening it, which is quoted as its own part of the visit. If the door is open, the work is extraction and securing.
Condition of the cylinder
Worn pins, a loose cap, grit or corrosion found after the piece is out may call for a service, a rekey or a new cylinder, each explained and quoted separately.
How the new key is made
Cutting from a key code or a crisp spare, decoding the two halves with a gauge, or cutting a restricted blank from system records each take different time and stock.

Things people wonder about

How do I stop keys breaking in future?

Look after the lock and the key ages slowly. Keep the cylinder lubricated with the product its maker specifies and free of grit, and have a binding door adjusted, since resistance raises the risk, though a worn, bent or fatigued key can still fail under normal use. Retire copies that have gone thin or kinked instead of straightening them. Cut spares from code, and rotate them so one key is not doing all the work. Take the ring weight off a car key. Small habits, but they add years.

What proof do I need to show?

Photo identification and something that connects you to the lock. For a house or apartment that is a lease, a bill, addressed post, or confirmation from the property manager; for a business, your role there; for a vehicle, the registration or ownership papers with matching identification. If the documents are inside, say so on the phone and the check is completed once the door is open.

What lubricant should I use on the lock afterwards?

Whatever the lock's own maker specifies, since cylinders differ: many call for a dry graphite or PTFE spray blown into the keyway and worked in with the key, once or twice a year, while others prohibit graphite and specify their own product instead. General-purpose oils, grease and sprays feel smooth at first but on most cylinders collect dust and clog the pins, which leads back to the sticking that breaks keys. A little goes a long way; too much of any lubricant can also hold moisture.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Decades of seasons move a frame, and an older house often has a front door that locks easily in summer and fights in winter. Setting the strike with the seasons in mind, and choosing a lubricant that stays fluid in the cold, keeps it working year round.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).Where housing is mostly apartments and condos, mailbox locks are a regular call. A worn or lost mailbox key is a small job that a locksmith handles alongside the suite door, and the new lock comes with fresh keys cut on the spot.
