Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

Your purse was taken from the back of a chair at a restaurant. The cards can be cancelled by phone tonight, but the house keys were in the side pocket beside a driver's licence that shows exactly where those keys fit.

In plain words

Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads. Replacement puts new hardware on the door: a new deadbolt or handle, and a finish that may not match its neighbours. Rekeying leaves all of that alone and changes what is inside the cylinder, commonly the pin stack on a conventional lock or a reset on a homeowner-rekeyable one, so a different key runs it. For hardware in good condition, that is the sensible choice: the door looks and feels as it did while the old key is retired. A worn cylinder can be replaced and keyed to match the rest in the same visit.

The call
The spare under the planter by the side door is gone. Everyone in the family swears they did not take it, the planter has clearly been shifted, and you have no idea how long ago that happened.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

Where the tenant and landlord line falls

Rented and shared buildings add a boundary that the locksmith maps early. A tenant's suite door is theirs to use but a lock change is agreed with the landlord, who receives keys as well. A condominium suite cylinder may sit on the building's master system, so its rekey is planned so the master still works, and the lobby, garage and amenity doors stay with the corporation. A small business rekeying a shop door checks what the lease says about the landlord holding a key. Sorting this out on the doorstep keeps every party informed and lets the work proceed with no surprise phone calls the following week.

  2. Scene 2

Setting a new combination pin by pin

On a conventional pin-tumbler cylinder, with it on the bench, the plug is turned slightly and a follower is slid in behind it so the springs and top pins stay in the housing rather than scattering. The plug comes out and the old bottom pins are tipped away. The new key is cut first, then a pin whose length matches each cut is dropped into the corresponding chamber, checked flush with a gauge, and the loaded plug is guided back under the follower. The plug should turn with a light, even feel and no catch. If it drags on one chamber, that pin is sized again before anything goes back on the door.

  3. Scene 3

A note for the landlord or building manager

Where a tenancy, a condominium or a commercial lease is involved, the visit ends with a plain written note: which cylinders were rekeyed, how many keys were cut, who received them, and the key code if the property keeps a register. Tenants pass it to the landlord along with the landlord's set of new keys, keeping the paper trail on both sides current. Condominium managers can update the building's key record. A small business can file it with the lease. It is a few lines that save a long conversation later.

In the van

What shapes the quoteHumberlea Lock Experts

The kind of lock each cylinder lives in
Knob, lever, deadbolt, mortise and rim cylinders come out of the door differently and take different care to refit. A mortise cylinder in a century home is more involved than a builder-grade knob.
Getting to each cylinder
Doors spread across a large lot, a suite up several flights behind a locked lobby, or a gated property with a padlock at the road add walking and waiting time that the quote allows for.
Homeowner-rekeyable cylinders without a working key
Resetting a homeowner-rekeyable cylinder when its key is gone uses that system's own reset fixture, where the installed lock supports one, and a few extra minutes per cylinder, which shows as a small line on the quote.

Things people wonder about

Do I need to be there for the whole visit?

An authorised adult should be present at the start, for identification and to agree the list of doors and the number of keys, and at the end, to test every key and take the count. In between, the work happens at the doors and on the van, so you are free to get on with your day inside. A property manager or a family member with your authorisation can stand in if you cannot be there.

Should I rekey when I move into a new home?

Lock manufacturers list moving as one of the main reasons to rekey, and it is easy to see why: previous owners, their relatives, a cleaner, a dog walker and a contractor may all hold copies you know nothing about. Rekeying every exterior cylinder in one visit resets the count to the keys in your hand, and it is a convenient moment to put every door on a single key as well.

My lock is the homeowner-rekeyable type but the working key is lost. Can it still be reset?

Yes. Those cylinders let an owner change the key with a small learn tool, but only while a working key is in hand. Without one, a design such as Kwikset SmartKey is removed and placed in its own reset fixture, returning it to a blank state; other cylinder types are rekeyed by their own method instead. A new key is then set and the lock goes back on. It is a few extra minutes rather than a replacement.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Old brass keys wear thin, and a key that has bent for years finally lets go in a cold cylinder. In older housing stock this is a regular call, so the locksmith is ready to extract the piece, check the cylinder and cut a new key from the code.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).Condo boards commonly set rules about what may be changed on the outside face of a suite door. A locksmith experienced with attached housing knows to keep the visible hardware within those rules while still upgrading the cylinder and strike behind it.
